King of the Stuntmen
Hello Stuntfans -
He set a Guinness Book record for the most broken bones, He catapulted himself into national stardom when he crashed after jumping the Fountains at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas. After spending 29 days in a coma and being told he would never walk again, his death defying antics continued as he attempted to jump the Snake River Canyon in a rocket propelled x-1 "motorcycle." Robert Craig "Evel" Knievel, the King of the Stuntmen died November 30 as succumbed to complications from pulmonary fibrosis. He was 69 years old.
Although he pulled off many successful jumps on his Harley Davidson he was best remembered for his spectacular and bone crunching failures, prompting his grandmother to ask him once, "Why don't you ever show people films of the jumps you've made, Bobby?"
Hats off to the man who lived his life doing his own stunts.
There is not much news from across the pond other than a few snippets here and there on the message board. The emails have been suspiciously silent. Freddy and Steve must be having a good time. The remaining shows in Strausbourg, with the Young at Heart Chorus are Sold Out. Steve managed to get back on line today with a two line comment. "Things are going well, Really Fucking Well!" Freddy's comment is "The French are way cool. I think them and us are amazed that we are not as obnoxious as(each other)expected."
Just two weeks until the Boston Release party for the Drunk Stuntmen/Young at Heart Chorus DVD, "Back to Back," at Church, formerly the Linwood Bar and Grill. Mike Flood is opening. This show is a must see.
Bow Bow started a thread on the message board titled "Okay Folks," where you can offer your opinion for a cover to be performed by the Drunk Stuntmen at the Rt. 63 Roadhouse on New Year's Eve.
The parameters seem to be...
A) It has to be a song that has not been previously covered by the Drunk Stuntmen. So Freebird is right out! Don't even go there. You will have to mortgage your house and single handedly fund the 24 month tour promoting the release of the upcoming album State Fair, if you ever want to see Freebird again. Not to mention Bow Bow may go to your house at 3 AM and call you out.
B)You have to actually be at the show, if you want to hear your request.
Right Now it is looking like "War Pigs" is the front runner. But we haven't checked in with the electronic voting machines in Ohio, and we are waiting for a recount from Broward County. Polls are still open. The best advice is "Vote early and vote often."
Stuntman Steve recently found a ticket agency offering tickets for the Drunk Stuntmen's Narrows Center for the Arts show in Fall River on December 29th, for $125 a piece.
Steve says, "I checked out the Narrows web site,www.ncfta.org/ and they still have tickets available for $12 plus a two dollar service charge. If anyone is stupid enough to pay that much to see us, why don't they give us the extra $111, we will mention you on the upcoming album and play three of your requests at the Narrows show."
If you check out the Narrows Line up you will see the Stuntmen are in good company. Scheduled to play in the near future are Richie Havens, Jorma Kaukonen, The New Riders of the Purple Sage, Duke Robillard, Dickey Betts and Ollabelle.
Soft Rock Scott Hall has a few shows coming up. He will be playing next weekend December 15th at Greendale's in Worcester with the Bruce Mandaro Band. Bruce is the longtime guitarist for the Grateful Dead cover band formerly known as Slipknot. Scott will be filling the shoes of the great Mark Mercier who has a gig with his own band, Max Creek, that night. Silver and Gold will be playing at the Basement in Northampton, MA, on December 30th. The line up includes Tim Miner, Soft Rock Scott and Seth Hall, Scott's younger brother.
We will have more information regarding the Trip to France next week.
