"It's rare that a band actually intends to work mostly "live", but
when that's the attitude, and the band has the skill, it's still the
best way to go. There's
nothing like real interaction between people to put nice detail into
the rhythms and dynamics of the performance. This is an aesthetic
that's pretty much the opposite of most commercial recordings nowadays.
So that was a breath of fresh air, and supremely efficient as well!"
This is what Mitch Easter had to say after the completion of his
recording sessions with the Drunk Stuntmen, last week in
Winston-Salem, NC.
Easter, a veteran rocker himself, with his band Let's Active,
co-produced REM's early recordings Reckoning and Murmur. He had a very
humble view of his contribution to the project and offered high praise
for the Stuntmen.
"Despite my reputation, such as it is,
as a producer, I'm really more of an all purpose studio guy, and I'm
not too concerned with titles. Most of the bands I record are more or
less within the kind of music I understand, and my role is highly
variable, depending upon time, goals, the budget, and everything else.
I've never been too comfortable with official roles on sessions and I
usually prefer to be simply be part of the team. If I can pipe up now
and then with a useful comment, I do it, but I am just as happy to fit
in to the band's notions and simply try to help things along. On a
fast session like this, we pretty much have to work that way!
Sometimes a band really needs the outside authority, but not the Drunk
Stuntmen! They have a mature and definite vision about things. I look
forward to seeing them live!"
Morgan Kraft, Easter's assistant chimed in. "The spirit of vintage
rock-n-roll recording techniques was captured recently at
Fidelitorium." He went on to say, "The Drunk Stuntmen, recorded their
new album live to 16 tracks on
2" tape." Kraft noted that Easter drew upon his 30 years of recording
experience,
and "utilized his skills, tube and classic
mics and compressors, and his much prized Neve VR
console to print to tape all the songs in only 3 days."
He went on, "The Stuntmen took the time to achieve every sound
heard "just right", by trying the vast collection of vintage guitars,
amps and key boards/organs available at Fidelitorium.
Morgan added, "The Stuntmen were also treated to a who's-who in rock history
when legendary producers Bill Szymczyk (who worked with The Eagles and
produced the Who's 1981 hit, "You better you Bet") and Don Dixon (who
co-produced REM's Murmur with Mitch Easter) dropped by for a visit.
Kraft stated that mixing should be completed in November, with Brent
Lambert from Kitchen Mastering set to master the album.
The yet untitled album will feature the songs - Every Third thing,
Underground, Silver City, Mid-Tempo, Buy Your love, Halcyon Days, Find
You, Still My Baby, Garden Gate, State Fair and 6:29. Mumbo Jumbo was
also recorded at the session but it remains unclear whether or not the
track will appear on the album. The album should be mastered in December
and available for release in early 2008.
The Drunk Stuntmen, once labeled as "the band that would not go away"
is planning their 15th anniversary show at the Iron Horse Music Hall
in Northampton, MA., October 27th, 2007. Showtime is 10 PM. The band
has some surprises and treats in store for the audience.
A limited First Run edition of The Young at Heart and Drunk Stuntmen
DVD of the 2004 performance, Back to Back, performed at
Northampton's Academy of Music Theater and The Hippodrome in
Springfield, MA, will be released that evening.
Anyone who attended these performances knows just how special they
were. The DVD, recorded at the Academy of Music, features the two
bands collaborating on Out Of Bed and Downtown Boys and Once in a
While. It also features blistering performances of Bolinas, complete
with a horn section, Drunken Sailor and All in Vain. The DVD was shot
with multiple angles on film. The Trailer Life video on the homepage
was shot at this performance.
There will be prizes for best costumes at the Halloween Spooktacular
including a copy of the DVD, copies of the Drunk Stuntmen's second
album, More Bad News and Prospects of Linguica, the EP released by
Soup the mountain funk band which evolved into the Drunk Stuntmen.
Tickets are available at the Northampton Box Office 800-THE-TICK, or
nbotickets.com. Admission is $10 in advance, and $13 at the Door.
Let's get busy and get creative. Tell everyone you know about the
show. Flyers and leaflets are available if you want to help us
promote the gig. Let's fill the place and fill it with costumes that
will live up to the name Spooktacular. As always, shows at the Iron
Horse are all ages.
For some good wholesome Family fun, pack up the younger Stuntfans and
head over to the Hyland Brewery and Orchard for their Octoberfest
October 20 and 21. The Stuntmen will be playing both days between 1
and 5 pm. Admission is free. There will be food and drink available.
There will also be apple and pumpkin picking, hayrides, a train ride
and a petting zoo. This is always a fun time in a beautiful setting.
That's it for now folks. Hope to see you this weekend in NYC at the
Rodeo Bar and Grill. Then Steve and Freddy leave for Ireland and the
next show will be the Octoberfest. If you make any show this month, Go
To The Iron Horse. It is always a wild time, especially a fun filled
event like this one.
